Rovers and Drymen book places in final

-

Balfron Rovers and Drymen United will meet in this year’s Margaret White Trophy final.

They came through their semi-finals against Blanefield Thistle and Aberfoyle Rob Roy to book their place on Saturday, July 15, at Thornhill.

On Saturday Drymen and Aberfoyle met at Donaldson Park, Balfron, and the match featured seven goals, a host of yellow cards, quality goalkeeping at both ends, clever football and non-step endeavour all through.

Logan Park gave Drymen the lead after only five minutes but Rob Roy were soon back on level terms when Craig McCallum scored.

Midway through the half Park struck again to restore the Drymen lead but Rob Roy replied again when James Ghattas scored their second.

Before the interval Park completed a fine hat-trick and this time Aberfoyle could not come back.

Four minutes into the second half Drymen’s Andy McNally was fouled just inside the box and Scott Cowan converted the penalty.

There was still more than half an hour to be played when Drymen right back Jack Bain scored their fifth and final goal.

Balfron and Blanefield met at Drymen on Tuesday in the second semi-final and it was an even contest for spells.

The bulk of first-half possession went to Balfron but their good work petered out around the Thistle goal.

After a goalless first half Balfron had the better of the second period but 20 minutes had gone before they bagged the opening goal through Scott Ross.

Five minutes later Cammy Rubython put his side 2-0 up when he out-jumped the defence to head in the clincher.
