Alva basked in tropical sunshine on Saturday as around 4000 spectators turned out to see the 161st Famous Alva Games.

Runners, cyclists, heavies, dancers and hill runners competed with the watching crowd witnessesi­ng a number of notable performanc­es.

The British Championsh­ip Hill Race was won for the second time by Ted Mason from Appletreew­ick who came home in 20 minutes 13 seconds ahead of Ben Mounsay (Elland) who had been first round the flag at the top.

Ben Proctor (Ulverston) a previous winner of the under 12, under 14 and under 17 races finished in third place.

This year’s under-12 winner was William Hall (Calder Valley) with the under 14 title going to Joel Taylor (Rossendale Harriers).

Greg Kelly (East Kilbride) won the Open 90 metres handicap which carried a first prize of £400 while Francis Smith (Woodford Green) turned in a fine performanc­e to win the 200 metres handicap and added the 90-metre Invitation Sprint title.

Father and son Donald and Ewan Bradley from Inverness landed a middle distance double with dad Donald winning the 800m and Ewan the 400m.

There was some local success in Alva’s Scott McDonald who was first in the 3200m and second in the 1600m.

More silverware came to Clackmanna­nshire with Tullibody cousins Sean and Steven Bates finishing first and third in the Youths 90m.

The throwing events were dominated by Lukasz Wenta (East Kilbride) who won six of the seven discipline­s - Kyle Randalls (Grangemout­h) thwarted the clean sweep with victory in the 22lb hammer.
