It’s Games on as crowd goes wild

- Robert Fairnie

Visitors from all over the world made their way to Killin for the annual Highland Games this week.

People from as far afield as Australia and the United States joined villagers at Breadalbane Park for a day of games and entertainment onWednesday.

Clan MacNab Gathering, who are all set to lead the first parade at the Edinburgh Tattoo, were present at the event – with Jamie MacNab Games Chieftain.

The Doune and Deanston Pipe Band led the parade from the Dochart Bridge to the games field in the afternoon, and they entertained guests with their playing all afternoon.

There were more than 70 entrants in the dancing while the pipe competitions were also well attended.

A similar number took part in the hotly-contested hill race – with Steven Rollinson the first man to finish and Diana McDonald the first lady across the line.

In the heavy events organisers were also pleased with the number and quality of entries – with local man Stuart Anderson putting up a good showing.

And budding young heavy athletes were even given the chance to test their own skills with the stone and hammer in the kids’games.

Games organiser Charlie Grant said:“We had an absolutely excellent turnout. It was one of the best events we’ve had. The number of foreign visitors was incredible, and the feedback we got was all really positive.

“The weather held up well and most people we spoke to said they’d like to come back again next year.

“The committee has done a fantastic job this year and made my job as chairman so much easier. I’d like to congratulate each and every one of them.”
