Kerr discusses farming issues with NFU reps
Stirling MP Stephen Kerr met with representatives from the NFU to discuss all things farming this week.
The politician listened to the issues currently affecting the industry which included Brexit and concerns over trade agreements along with standards of food production.
NFU officials are keen to ensure access to vital markets in EU countries are maintained due to trade in products such as lamb and beef.
Mr Kerr, whose grandfather and greatgrandfather were ploughmen, said:“The agricultural sector has a proud heritage across our area and is one of the most important industries.
“Our rural economy must be fully supported by Westminster and Holyrood. This will be a priority for me. Having regular dialogue with the NFU and farmers will ensure I stay well informed and that I am raising important issues with both governments.
“Of course getting Brexit right is vitally important for farming, as it is for all sectors of our economy, but there are many other issues faced by farmers that need addressing and continued effective scrutiny.”
The NFU opened a new office at Stirling Agricultural Centre last week. The official launch was well-attended and former NFUS President and current chairman of Quality Meat Scotland Jim McLaren MBE was on hand to cut the ribbon and say a few words.
