Queen’s baton onway tocity
Events will take place across the city this week to mark the arrival of the Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay.
The baton will visit Stirling Castle, St Ninians Primary and the University of Stirling as the build-up to next year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia hots up.
The castle will welcome the baton from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday for the Bahamas 2017 Youth Games team celebration.
The Scottish team returned last month with 21 medals and a number of stand-out performances and this event is designed to celebrate their achievements.
The baton will then make its way to St Ninians Primary for the daily mile between 10.30am and 11.30am on Friday.
Pupils will be joined by para-athlete Sammi Kinghorn, fresh from her success at the World Para Athletic Championships in London, along with deputy first minister John Swinney.
The University of Stirling is the next stop from 3pm to 5pm, where the baton relay will meet students linked to the Commonwealth and Scottish athletes past and present.
Among the guests will be Anna Sloan, curling Olympic bronze medallist, and swimmers Duncan Scott and Ross Murdoch.
The final visit will be to see the team behind the team at the university’s institute of sport from 4pm to 5pm.
Guests will have the chance to meet those who are helping to prepare athletes for the Commonwealth Games.Those in attendance will include David Somerville, who won a Commonwealth Games silver medal in judo, and Mayor Mark Jamieson of Sunshine Coast Council in Queensland, who are hosting the Scottish team camp.
