Poor weather for fishermen

-

Frandy (Gleneagles) On the individual front Bob Oliver and George Keithley (Doune) had three fish weighing 7lb 8oz; Tom Clark (Bannockburn) two for 6lb; Gerard McGuire (Banknock) eight for 18lb.

Angling clubs were out in force with SPRA North AC keeping 37 fish weighing 86lb 2oz and releasing 43; RAF Northern League eight for 19lb 14oz and SSEB HQ AC 29 for 64lb 6oz.

The best flies and lures last week included the Daddy Longlegs, Kate McLaren, Bibio Hopper, Sedgehog, Sedge Muddler, Cormorant and the Red Diawl Bach whilst the top fishing spots are on the Dogleg but all areas are generally fishing well. Orchill Loch (Braco) Yet another mixed week of weather with the fish still taking dries and buzzers as well as variety of lures. On Saturday the Vale AC from Dumbarton had a good windy, sunny and showery day catching 38 fish for 105lbs 4oz with Gavin Lees having the heaviest basket with four weighing 13lbs on a Black and Green lure.

Other individual catches included Ricky Lapsley (Bonnybridge) two for 9lbs on Buzzers; Kenny Low (Stirling) two for 6lbs on a Black Dancer; John Gilchrist (Stirling) three for 9lbs on a Fab; Alex Burns (Bonnybridge) two for 8lbs on a Damsel and Alec Fitzsimmons (Fintry) four for 12lbs 8oz on a Damsel. Lake of Menteith Fisheries Still a bit of algae ready to appear on windward shores or when the wind drops – but it is only a thin skim if it appears.

The fish are readily taking dries just now – especially if the flies are properly presented and the nylon

degreased, but the current trendy method is a medium length sink tip with booby and diawls.

Change A (Jock Kettles, Andy Dunn and Kevin McCabe) used this to good effect last Friday to win their Scottish Club Championship semi final.

The fish are fairly spread out just now but good areas are Gateside Bay, Stable Point, Sam’s Point and Rookery. Swanswater Fishery The changeable weather continued this week but despite some heavy downpours, the water clarity remains very good with water temperature sitting at 140C.

The fish were in the top three feet of the water for most of the week, only going deeper on odd occasions. They were on and off the feed depending on time of day and what conditions were at the time.

Most of the natural feed is very small and the hatches are also small. When the fish were feeding, buzzers, wets and dries were working well, but when they were off the feed, lures were needed to tempt them. Golds continue to be visible and are providing a lot of good sport and a certain amount of frustration. A few browns are being seen and caught but they are generally pretty hard to tempt at the moment.

Top local catches: Danny Doherty (Denny) four for 9lb 8oz including three golds; John Mathieson (Doune) three for 7lb 8oz including a gold; Rab Bonar (Alva) 3lb brown; Tim Gellaitry (Stirling) caught and released five. Glenbervie Fishery A lot of rain and dull most of the week and trout seem to like more fast retrieve at the moment. There are only few places left for Glenbervie Fishery competition on fly on Sunday, August 27.

Few fish caught still mostly on dries and buzzers. Catches included: Geordie Penn six on Yellow Owl; David Blair five mostly on Yellow Dancer; Damien Handy released four; Colin Easton three including 8lb rainbow; Roy McLaren, Duncan Taylor and Bob Nichols caught five.

The most successful patterns this week: Yellow Owl, various Buzzers, Yellow Dancer, Hoppers and Diawl Bach. On bait: C Forsyth caught two, D Nailor landed three for 7lb 10oz, Scott Cameron got three for 8lb, S Stewart had four for 9lb, Craig Knowles landed three and Alan Harley got four.
