Fury as memorial bench targeted

- Robert Fairnie

Cruel vandals damaged a special bench erected in memory of a much-loved Dunblane woman one week before the fourth anniversary of her passing.

The seat, which overlooks the BMX track in Laighills Park, was targeted some time between Monday, August 21 and Friday, August 25.

It is thought those responsible hurled a large rock from an adjacent firepit at the seat and arm causing extensive damage which could cost up to £400 to repair.

The bench was installed in the park in memory of well-known Dunblane woman Alison Gean Davis who died after a battle with cancer at the age of 43 in September 2013 leaving behind a husband and three children.

A group of her friends thought it would be a fitting tribute to introduce the bench to the park in a position which looks on to the house Alison used to live in.

The bench had only been in place little over two weeks when the damage was caused and a memorial plaque was set to be put up in the coming days.

One of Alison’s close friends, who asked not to be named, slammed the cruel vandals responsible for this act.

She said:“I would love it if the person or people who did this would stop for a minute and think about the consequences of their actions, and perhaps realise the hurt they have caused in doing something so senseless and destructive.

“The police have been informed and if anyone wishes to give any information about this act of vandalism please call them.”

She added:“It is an eco-bench which is made of recycled materials. It is very durable and is very much in-keeping with her attitude towards the world and its resources.

“Dunblane Development Trust worked hard to install it and it is a very special bench. She is very much missed and this would provide a place for her friends and family to go and sit, to reflect on our beautiful town in a place that was dear to her.”

The Dunblane Centre are holding a collection tin for anyone wishing to contribute to the cost of the repairs – and some local people and businesses have already pledged their support.

Police say that their enquiries are ongoing and they are appealing for anyone who has information on this mindless act of vandalism to get in touch.
