Andy’s US Open exit after injury

Dunblane ace misses final Grand Slam of 2017

- Donald Morton

Home hopes of US Open glory were ended before the tournament even began when Andy Murray pulled out of the final Grand Slam of the year on Saturday after failing to recover from a hip injury.

The Dunblane ace hasn’t played since Wimbledon when he lost to Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals.

Murray still has to decide whether or not he’ll be court again in 2017 but with little to play for, he may well stop for the rest of the season like Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka have done.

He practised all week in New York but said the injury was too sore for him to win the tournament.

“Ultimately that’s what I was here to try and do,” said the world No 2.

The 2012 US Open champion was due to face American world number 104 Tennys Sandgren in the first round.

“I did pretty much everything that I could to get myself ready here and took a number of weeks off after Wimbledon,” added Murray. “I obviously spoke to a lot of hip specialists. Tried resting, rehabbing, to try and get myself ready here.”

It means the spotlight falls on big brother Jamie who is defending his men’s doubles title with Brazilian Bruno Soares at Flushing Meadows.

The duo, who are seeded No 4, will meet the Austrian pairing of Julian Knowle and Alexander Peya in round one later this week.
