MP Kerr back at uni
Stirling MP Stephen Kerr visited Stirling University as part of the celebrations marking its 50 th anniversary.
A former student of the university, Mr Kerr met principal and vice chancellor Professor Gerry McCormac and deputy secretary Joanna Morrow to discuss the main challenges and opportunities facing the institution as it looks towards the next 50 years. He was accompanied by MP for Ochil and South Perthshire MP Luke Graham,
Talks included how the Stirling and Clacks City Region Deal will benefit the university, and the university’s scientific, economic, and cultural contributions towards the wider area.
Professor McCormac spoke of its groundbreaking research work .
He spoke about studies underway to find a natural alternative to pesticides, something that could have a significant impact on Scotland’s rapidly expanding aquaculture industry.
The visit also commemorated Stirling’s entrance into the top 500 universities worldwide. The university is also 38th in the UK, and 6th in Scotland according to Times Higher Education rankings.
Mr Kerr said:“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student at Stirling, and am very proud that my old university is better than ever.
“Being one of the top 500 universities worldwide is a huge achievement, and I would like to thank all the staff and students who have helped build the institution into what it is today. The university is well-placed to face the challenges before it.”
