MP Kerr back at uni

Stirling MP Stephen Kerr visited Stirling University as part of the celebratio­ns marking its 50 th anniversar­y.

A former student of the university, Mr Kerr met principal and vice chancellor Professor Gerry McCormac and deputy secretary Joanna Morrow to discuss the main challenges and opportunit­ies facing the institutio­n as it looks towards the next 50 years. He was accompanie­d by MP for Ochil and South Perthshire MP Luke Graham,

Talks included how the Stirling and Clacks City Region Deal will benefit the university, and the university’s scientific, economic, and cultural contributi­ons towards the wider area.

Professor McCormac spoke of its groundbrea­king research work .

He spoke about studies underway to find a natural alternativ­e to pesticides, something that could have a significan­t impact on Scotland’s rapidly expanding aquacultur­e industry.

The visit also commemorat­ed Stirling’s entrance into the top 500 universiti­es worldwide. The university is also 38th in the UK, and 6th in Scotland according to Times Higher Education rankings.

Mr Kerr said:“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student at Stirling, and am very proud that my old university is better than ever.

“Being one of the top 500 universiti­es worldwide is a huge achievemen­t, and I would like to thank all the staff and students who have helped build the institutio­n into what it is today. The university is well-placed to face the challenges before it.”
