Bridge memories span the decades

- Chris Marzella

A Riverside woman has walked the new Queensferry Crossing 53 years after making a similar trek across the old Forth Road Bridge.

Linda Pirie’s father, Robert Meikle, was one of the sheet metal workers who helped construct the Forth Road Bridge and he and Linda, along with Linda’s mother Joyce and her sister Margaret, were invited to attend the opening which included the Queen on September 4, 1964.

Now Linda has been lucky enough to also be selected to walk the new Queensferry Crossing.

Linda and her husband David were among 50,000 lucky people selected from a ballot to walk the new £1.35 billion crossing last weekend.

Linda and David got the chance to walk the new 1.7 mile crossing on Saturday.

She was thrilled to take part in the walk and it brought back memories of that day in September 1964 when she attended the opening of the old crossing with her family

Speaking of the new crossing, Linda said:“It was an absolutely amazing day.

“What a bridge it is. My husband was so impressed by it.

“It is totally different. It is like another generation of civil engineering.”

She added:“There was one little girl with her mum and dad and I thought to myself‘I wonder if she will be doing the same as me in 50 years’.

“It was quite surreal walking over it. I had a think back to my mum and dad. It was lovely.”

The bridge was officially opened by the Queen on Monday.
