Torchlight procession from castle

-

The festival’s official opening on Friday is a gala occasion in Stirling Castle’s regal Great Hall followed by a torchlight procession down to the Albert Halls.

Stirling Schools Pipe Band will perform at castle before leading authors such as Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Chris Brookmyre and Mark Billingham and Provost Christine Simpson, the winner of the McIlvanney Prize and finalists plus the reception audience follow hot on their heels.

There is still an opportunity to join in the procession. Tickets at £5 (£4 for Stirling residents) are available and this allows one adult to accompany two children on the torchlight parade.

Those taking part should be at the castle for 7.45pm for a safety briefing before the procession at around 8.10pm. It is not recommended for under fives and buggies are not allowed.

Limited tickets are available at www. bloodyscotland.com or at 01786 274000.

•On Saturday at 2pm, the annual crime writers football match takes place on the former bowling green at the Cowane’s Hospital between Scotland and England.

In 2016, England won the Bloody Cup and the homesters - who will feature local writer Craig Robertson - will be looking to win back the trophy.

Entry is free and there will be a bar hosted by new sponsor Stirling GIn.

As part of the festival three young authors will visit three secondary schools on Friday.

Sarah Pinborough is at Stirling High at 11.30am; Cathy MacPhail will be at Balfron High at 1.45pm and St Modan’s High will host Helen Grant at 1.15pm.
