Service needs new faces

- Chris Marzella

Fire stations in rural areas are looking to recruit new firefighters.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) need retained firefighters for Aberfoyle, Balfron, Callander, Crianlarich, Doune and Killin.

They are looking for men and women to carry out a range of duties including attending a wide variety of emergency incidents, as well as carrying out work within the communities.

Firefighters would be on call to respond to a range of emergencies.

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: “We’re interested in people with a variety of availability but are particularly keen to hear from those who are available during weekdays.

“A key aim of the SFRS is to reflect the communities that we work in and to engage positively with people living and working within these communities.

“No matter what your background or circumstances, you may have what it takes for a rewarding and challenging career in the service.

“Our retained firefighters come from every walk of life, including shopkeepers, builders, plumbers, farmers, secretaries, engineers and directors of companies, together with people who are not currently employed.

“Previous experience is not required thanks to a comprehensive training programme. “

Recruits must be physically fit and able to respond rapidly to pager activation.

The SFRS is holding a recruitment event where interested people can speak to firefighters about their job and experiences and try out some of the practical aspects of the role.
