Periodic Table Mural Artist Murray Robertson visited the school to give an illustrated talk about the new periodic table mural he has created for the science department. Murray was originally commissioned to create a new periodic table by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2000. Since then he has created an individual visual representation of all the known elements. All the visuals used for each element relate directly to the origins, uses and discovery of the elements. These appear in the society’s interactive website at www.rsc.org/ periodictable. Murray was joined by Frank Murray from the Royal Society of Chemistry to talk about how the table had been created with pupils from S1 to S6. Our young people then were able to ask Murray specific questions relating to the elements, computer aided art and design and how an artist makes a living. Murray has ensured the mural is up to date with the most recently discovered elements being exclusively added to the mural. He has worked on many projects that bring together art and science including illustrating viruses for Glasgow University. His work can be found at www.certainerrors. co.uk. The mural not only transforms the science department from a visual point of view but is being well used to aid to learning and teaching.
