Come along for a chat and to try your luck, while enjoying the buzz of the festival and – new for this year – the performance stage in the Square, where different musicians will appear every hour, to keep the atmosphere festive. All funds raised at our stall will, as usual, be used to benefit local and national good causes. We were happy to be able to hand over a cheque this week to Callander’s newest charity, Trossachs Mobility. All-terrain vehicles are also available for hire to residents and visitors to the town, enabling people with mobility problems to get out and about, around the town and beyond, to enjoy the woodlands, hills and footpaths. The mystery of the vanishing benches….Various people in Callander have observed that three large benches have recently disappeared from the area by the river, near the library in South Church Street. We can reveal that our Rotarians have actually kidnapped these, and removed them to a workspace to allow them to dry out, be repaired, restored and repainted to match others in the area. We promise to return these, for the benefit of residents and tourists alike, as soon as we have smartened them up. The next project on our agenda is the planting of a Commemorative Glade, to honour the memory of the 67 servicemen from Callander who lost their lives in World War 1. On October3, pupils from both Callander Primary and McLaren High School will help us to plant 100 trees, under the guidance of Forestry Commission staff, near the foot of Ben Ledi. A piper will play, to entertain us all while the planting is under way, and Mike Cantlay, chair of Scottish Natural Heritage has kindly agreed to come along and perform the ‘opening ceremony’. Obituary The village heard with regret on Monday of the passing that morning of Kippenite Bella Crawford in Stirling Community Hospital. She would have been 90 next February. Bella was born in Black House, on the Carse, attended Kippen and Balfron Schools, moving with her family to Oakwood in 1950. Bella worked at Thorntree, eventually retiring to Hay’s Hill with her sister Annie. She was an active member of the Flower Show Committee and of the Reading Room Management Committee for many years and was still organiser of the monthly whist drive. She will be missed by many. Sincere sympathy is extended to her sisters Agnes, Annie and Betty, to their families and to the extended family far and near. There will be a service in Kippen Church next Wednesday, September 27, at noon and afterwards to Kippen Cemetery. All were available through the ‘Open Doors’ initiative with Kippen Heritage officials stewarding The Smiddy and The Boatyard and elders Joanna McPhail and Margery Stirling, the Church. While many were from Central area a few were from further afield. One family had come specially from Durham, of the Rennie, Blacksmiths. Kippen Heritage is grateful for the support received and always welcomes photographs etc. Margaret Oswald, Vine Cottage, is secretary.
