Martin not missed

Skipper savours Waverley victory

- Sports reporter

Bridge of Allan seconds continued their unbeaten start to their East of Scotland Squash Division Two campaign with a fine 3-2 victory over Waverley that has taken them second top.

The Richardson and Starling sponsored side proved too strong for their Edinburgh opponents, despite skipper Martin Jack being absent as they enter the October break in fine fettle.

With a dominant straight sets victory for Jonny Brady being cancelled out by Andy Meldrum’s defeat, Martin Sanchez’s tight four-set success at number four tipped the scales back in BofA’s favour.

However, at the top of the order young James Dougan found former Scotland international Chris Jack too strong, despite battling all the way and it was down to James Stewart to clinch the tie with a clinical display in the anchor man role.

Captain Martin Jack said afterwards: “Waverley have come down from the top-flight and are a first team who are spearheaded by a former Scotland international, so we have got to be delighted with our win over them.

“We have had a particularly tough start to the new season and to be sitting just two points off the top, unbeaten, in second place going into the break is really pleasing.”

Meanwhile, there was frustration for the first team after the late cancellation of their trip to Colinton Castle which has now been re-arranged for Thursday, October 19.

Elsewhere the thirds continued their fine start to Division Five campaign with a 5-0 win over Waverley IV.

Skipper Stewart Penman chalked up his first success of the season with a commanding straights sets victory and was quickly followed on to the scoreboard by teenager Niall Baxter.

Although club president Walter McAllister dropped a game, he proved too crafty for a game young opponent and at the top of the order teenagers Ben Orr and Robbie Harper were also decisive straight sets victors.

The win took them to the top of the table skipper Penman said: “It took us up until December to post our first win last season, now we have already won twice in our first two games this term.

“That tells you how much stronger we are and I am delighted with our new young recruits Niall, Ben and Robbie they are all young lads with very bright squash futures.”

In the East Ladies League, BofA beat Watsonians in a tight 4-1 tussle.

Early victories for Louise Hunter and Maureen Carroll in mid-order were backed up by similarly strong showings by Karen Robertson and Sheena Logan at the top of the order after June Hegarty had been unlucky to lose a see-saw four setter at number five.

With her side sitting second after the opening round of fixtures delighted lady captain Sheena Logan said: “Everyone worked really hard and on another night we might have had full points but it was a great way to open the season and one that has set a high standard for the weeks to come.”
