WIN a pass to safari park

-

The penguin is one of the most graceful and streamlined swimmers there is, but out of the water it’s another story!

On land, they do not perch but instead stand upright and move with a comical waddle.

There are 11 penguins at Blair Drummond Safari Park – four pairs, two bachelors and one juvenile. The animals live in the‘Safari Walk’ section of the park and are looked after by head keeper, Lisa Smith.

“There are 18 different species of penguin – all from the Southern Hemisphere,”said Lisa,“and the species that we have at Blair Drummond Safari Park are Humboldt penguins.

“Humboldts are a medium sized penguin from Chile and Peru and are named after the Humboldt current which runs down the west coast of South America.

“They make their nests in burrows and caves on beaches and rocky shores, nesting in their own poo (guano). Colonies are threatened as people“harvest”the guano to use as fertiliser.

Lisa added:“Humboldt penguins are monogamous, which means that they mate for life. The female will lay two eggs and both parents share the responsibility for the incubation of these eggs and the care of the chicks.

“The chicks stay in the nest until they have moulted from their fluffy grey feathers to their waterproof juvenile plumage at around eight-10 weeks old.”

The Stirling Observer has teamed up with Blair Drummond Safari Park again this season to offer the chance of winning a family pass each week.
