Hotel virus death probe

Questions asked at inquiry

- Alastair McNeill

A woman died shortly after developing norovirus during a stay at a Trossachs hotel.

And her family hope an inquest this week will provide vital answers regarding her death.

Norma Francis from Gnosall, Staffordshire, died aged 79 in 2016 shortly after suffering serious gastric illness symptoms.

The symptoms forced her to cut short a stay at the Loch Achray Hotel with her husband John.

Following a long journey home by taxi, which had been arranged by the hotel, Norma became unconscious and was taken by ambulance to Stafford A&E. However, despite their best efforts, she died. An inquest to determine the cause of Norma’s death was set to begin at Stafford Coroners Court yesterday (Thursday) and last for two days.

Following the pensioner’s death her family instructed law firm Irwin Mitchell to help them find out whether more could have been done to help her at the hotel, run by Lochs and Glens Holidays.

Norma’s daughter Anne Francis, 52, said: “Around 18 months on from Mum’s death we are all still attempting to come to terms with our loss.

“It has been hard to move forward when we still have so many questions regarding her death so we truly hope this inquest will be a step in the right direction and help us understand whether anything more could have been done to tackle the illness problems she endured and ultimately prevent her death.”

A spokesperson for Lochs and Glens said: “The inquest is ongoing and it would be inappropriate to offer any comment at this time.”
