Citizen Colin cleans up community award

Nominated for outstanding service and dedication to town

- Alastair McNeill

Callander annual citizen of the year award has gone to the town’s street cleaner – from Bannockburn.

Up until now, the gong had to be awarded to someone from within the parish.

But organisers decided to relax the critieria to recognise the efforts of hard-working Stirling Council employee Colin Clark.

He has been keeping the town’s streets tidy for ten years and was given the accolade in recognition of his “outstanding” service to Callander.

He was presented with the 2017 award by members of Callander Community Council on Wednesday in Ancaster Square.

Community council members described Colin as cheerful, courteous, friendly and thorough.

Their secretary Catherine McNab told the Observer: “Colin is our wellregarded street cleaner. He is friendly to everybody.

“Colin has been keeping the town’s streets clean for some years now and is a very popular choice. Many residents remark on what an excellent job he does – all round the town no matter what the weather.

“Although his home is in Bannockburn, he is a well-known face in Callander. This award shows our appreciation for his work and presence here.”

Among the nominees were ‘Greener Callander’ member Hilary Gunkel and Trossachs and Teith councillor Martin Earl.

On receiving the award Colin said he was “bowled over”. He added: “Everyone here is so friendly and appreciative. It is a great town, full of great people – Thank you all so much.”

Councillor Earl said: “Colin totally deserves this award and it just goes to show how much his efforts every day are appreciated by everyone in the town.

“He is so dedicated to helping keep Callander clean and tidy and I was very happy to be one of the people who nominated him, so ‘thank you’ Colin, Callander is lucky to have you.”
