A82 to close again due to weather

- Robert Fairnie

A stretch of the A82 is set to close again next week as a road improvement project continues.

A programme of works – which forced some motorists into a diversion of up to 50-miles – were partially completed this week but poor weather has led to an extension to the project.

More than £1 million has been invested in the A82 between Tarbet and Crianlarich with a programme of improvements being carried out during a 12-day project.

BEAR Scotland say that most of the works were carried out successfully and the road was fully reopened at 6pm on Tuesday.

However workers will be back on-site on Monday between 8am and 6pm to finish off the road resurfacing. The road will remain open but there will be a 10mph convoy system in place.

And on Tuesday a stretch of road just north of Tarbet will close from 8am to 6pm so works can be carried out on the narrow bends at Home on the Loch.

Among the works completed this week was the installation of 86 new chevron signs, 365 new verge markets and more than 900 new barrier-mounted reflectors to improve visibility.

In addition, more than 50,000 metres of road markings were refreshed and around 1400 new road studs were installed. Around 600 metres of dilapidated wall was removed and drainage removed.

The Dubh Eas Bridge near the Falls of Falloch was painted to protect against rust while approximately 60,000 branches and two tonnes of litter was cleared.

Eddie Ross of BEAR Scotland said: “Our teams have finished the vast majority of the £1 million programme of improvements we had set out to complete earlier this month including replacing the full crash barrier heavily damaged earlier this year.

“We’re disappointed not to have the full programme of work completed within the timescales we had outlined at the start of the project, however the weather has impacted our programme.

He added: “Heavy rain and low temperatures can have a significant impact on road materials during surfacing operations such as this, and although the weather is outwith our control, our teams will continue to do all they can to minimise disruption and complete the works as quickly and safely as possible next week.

“We’ve updated all relevant stakeholders to inform them of the extension to the project, and once again thank all road users for their continued patience while we finish off this programme of improvements, and be pleased with the results.”
