MYSTERY DEATH IS PROBED BY COPS

999 alert too late to save Stephen

- John Rowbotham

Police yesterday (Thursday) said they were treating as “unexplained” the death of a Stirling man in St Ninians.

Investigations are underway to find out how Stephen Cochrane died. Pals have taken to social media to post tributes to the 36-year-old former Wallace High pupil, who had worked at Scotbeef in Bridge of Allan.

Police and paramedics rushed to a block of flats in Glasgow Road about 1.20pm after a 999 call on Tuesday from a member of the public who was concerned about the welfare of a man, later identified as Mr Cochrane.

He lived elsewhere in Stirling and two years ago was staying at an address in Raploch.

The block was cordoned off as medics went to treat Mr Cochrane but he died in one of the flats.

Residents in neighbouring properties were left in the dark about the circumstances surrounding Mr Cochrane’s death.

One neighbour said: “We saw all of the police cars and the ambulance and the police tape was up. There was quite a bit of commotion but nobody seems to know what happened. ”

Detective Inspector Kenny McAndrew of Stirling CID said: “This matter is still under investigation and all I can say is it is being treated as unexplained. A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal but we do not think there are any suspicious circumstances.

“There are inquiries still to be carried out but we are not appealing for any further information at the moment.”

Police are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

Among those who took to social media to pay tribute to Mr Cochrane was Carolanne Robertson: “So can’t believe the news I’m just hearing. One of my oldest friends Stephen, from all my life, has been taken far too soon.”

Owen Ewing wrote: “One of the good guys taken far too soon. Rest in peace mate.”

Ryan Brown posted: “RIP Floyd bud.

“Sleep tight mate. You’ll be missed by many.”
