Jail for rapist who boasted he’d sleep with 100 women at university faculty

-

A former Stirling University worker who raped a student he met on a dating app has been jailed.

Duncan Burns, a former accommodation liaison officer at the university, was jailed for five years at the High Court on Glasgow yesterday (Tuesday).

The court had previously heard how Burns boasted he was going to sleep with 100 women at the education facility.

A jury previously heard evidence that Burns was a sexual predator who forced himself on a young female student – who he met on Tinder – after arranging early morning meetings with her.

His victim, who was aged 20 at the time, said she went back to her flat and“Googled the definition of rape”.

Burns was found guilty at the High Court in Livingston last month.

The victim alleged Burns raped her in one of the university’s halls of residence on March 23, 2016.

Burns, 24, of Birkhill, Angus, lodged special defences claiming any sexual contact he had was with consensual.

Sentencing him on Wednesday, Lord Mulholland said:“The jury rejected your evidence that the sexual intercourse with the complainer was consensual and believed her account of rape. The jury held that you had sexual intercourse with the complainer without her consent. Despite making it plain to you that she did not want to have sexual intercourse with you, you ignored her wishes and used force to have sexual intercourse with her.

“That amounts to the crime of rape in Scotland. This court takes a very serious view of such criminal conduct. You will be sentenced to five years imprisonment, backdated to November 1 2017.”

Burns was suspended by the university in July, 2016.
