No room for mistakes at Boroughmuir

- Bert Mitchell

Stirling County skipper Jonny Hope described Saturday’s trip to Boroughmuir as a must-win match.

The Bridgehaugh men have not savoured the sweet taste of success since they despatched Marr 40-29 way back on October 28.

A campaign that started so brightly with an exhilarating victory at Heriots is starting to unravel but Hope remains defiant that County can go into the festive break on a high.

He said:“Regardless of the result against Watsonians, the performance was positive and we mustn’t lose sight of that but, pure and simple, Boroughmuir is a must-win game for us.

“There was a real sense of‘how did that happen?’in the dressing room after the Watsonians defeat. It was gut-wrenching.

“To start the way we did, build a commanding lead and score four tries at home and lose, well, it just can’t happen.

“We need to show character and produce a winning performance at Boroughmuir on Saturday.

“Right now all that matters is that we get the win. It’s a case of the lads sticking together, everyone rallying round and us digging deep.”

Hope was in no mood to play down the size of the task awaiting his men at Meggetland.

He said:“Boroughmuir’s game with Currie was off last weekend but before that they caused problems for Melrose so it will be tough.

“But for three-quarters of the game against Watsonians we were good and the first-half performance was the best we have produced recently. That has to be the benchmark for the whole game against Boroughmuir.”

He added:“Nobody wants to go into the festive break on the back of a loss and if we can get the win it would give us something positive to build on when we come back in January against Ayr.”
