Epic Scotland drive raises £25k for charity

-

Drive Scotland, a charity event which started at Stirling and District Classic Car Club’s annual show at Bridge of Allan, raised £25,500 for Teenage CancerTrust.

Alan Biggar and his team of co-drivers took a 60-year-old Morgan sports car on an 1800-mile trip around Scotland.

The epic journey involved 12 ferry crossings and visits to Orkney, Shetland, Skye, the Outer Hebrides, Islay and Jura.

It was Alan and his team’s fourth charity drive during which they have notched up 10,412 miles in a bid to help the trust.

Alan worked as a stockbroker and was head of Brewin Dolphin’s Edinburgh office, retiring in January 2010.

He lives in Bo’ness and is the Scottish patron of Teenage Cancer Trust and also a director of the Scottish SPCA.

Joining him on the charity drives were Hugh McMinn, North Berwick; Simon Scott , Barry; Aly Hunter, Kirkliston and Hugh Brown, Edinburgh.

Prior to this year’s Drive, Alan had raised in excess of £350,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Alan said:“It has been great passing the 10,000 mile mark and I am just so grateful to all the sponsors, donors and those who have supported the project from the start.”

He started helping the Teenage Cancer Trust a decade ago following the death of Zoe King, the 17-year-old daughter of a work colleague.

Audrey Murray, Teenage Cancer Trust Scotland manager, said Alan had been a big part of the charity’s growth in Scotland.

“His incredible fundraising efforts will help us move towards our target of reaching every young person with cancer in Scotland. Currently, we are only able to reach around half of those who need us, but our nursing and support service will mean our specialist nurses can reach young people, no matter where they live.“
