Thursday, December 7 Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Cattle: Caley Marts sold 257 cattle comprising of 145 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls and 112 cast cows and bulls. The show was kindly sponsored by Agricar and the judge today was George Jarron of Scott Brothers, Strathmart­ine Road, Dundee. The following were his awards: Overall Champion - Craig Malone, Pitcairn, Cardenden with a home-bred Limousin heifer which scaled at 540kg and made £3.50 per kg to Scott Brothers. Reserve Champion - Stephanie Dick, Westerton, Stirling, a Limousin bullock scaled 548kg and realised £3.40 per kg again to Scott Brothers. Results: Class 1 (Single Continenta­l Bullock) - 1 Stephanie Dick (Reserve Champion); 2 W Gray, Balquharra­ge, Lennoxtown at 534kg, making 275p pkg to B Kirk and Son, Butchers, Denny; 3 DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuth­ill, Muthill at 590kg, making 255p pkg to T Johnston, Butcher, Falkirk. Class 2 (Single Native Bullock) - 1 JH and NT Turnbull, Meadowend, Clackmanan with a Shorthorn at 534kgs, making 240p to J Hutchison and Son, Butcher, Tullibody; 2 and 3 S Ballantyne, Balkaithly,St Andrews at 706kg, making 235p to J H Gilvear and Sons, and 702kg making 232p to WP Tulloch, Paisley. Class 3 (Single Continenta­l Heifer) - 1 Craig Malone (Champion); 2 W Gray, Balquharra­ge at 484kg, making 265p to D Campbell and Son, Butcher, Callander; 3 D Dickinson, Brockwoodl­ees, Canonbie at 636kg, making 262p to T Johnston, Butchers, Falkirk. Class 4 (Pair of Bullocks) - 1 J Caldwell, Moorfield, Kilmarnock at 604kg, both selling to T Johnston at 248p and 245p; 2 DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuth­ill at 582kg and 574kg, selling to 265p and 252p to Scott Bros and G Kirk respective­ly; 3 JH and NT Turnbull at 678kg and 668kg selling to 242p and 235p to T Johnston. Class 5 (Pair of Heifers) - 1 J Wylie, Knockhouse, Dunfermlin­e at 612kg and 574kg making 285p and 282p to T Johnston and Scott Brothers respective­ly; 2 JH and NT Turnbull at 618kg and 584kg selling to 250p and 245p to Hugh Black and Son, Stirling and Scott Brothers; 3 D Dickinson at 570kg and 586kg making 262p and 255p to WW Wales Ltd, Kilmarnock and Hugh Black and Sons, Stirling. Once again all classes would be the opposite of the deadweight trend, with a much improved show for numbers, however some buyers still short of their requiremen­ts. Prime bullocks averaged 230p pkg; prime heifers 237p pkg; young bulls 209p pkg; cast beef cows 122p; cast dairy cows 101p; OTM males 134p. Tuesday, December 12 Caley Marts sold 2345 prime lambs, ewes and tups at their annual Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Sheep, which was kindly sponsored by AA Oils. The show was judged by Andrew Morton Jnr, Lochend Farm, Denny and the following were his awards: Champion pen went to JB Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Muthill for an outstandin­g pen of Beltex X weighing 51kg and fetching a final bid of £158 to Hugh Black, Butcher, Port Street, Stirling. Reserve Champion also went to Cuiltburn, again for three Beltex lambs weighing 46.5kg and selling to £140 to A Gray, Butcher, Upper Craigs, Stirling. Prize list: Pen of Three Beltex - 1 JB Guthrie, Cuiltburn (Overall Champion) – 51kg at £158 (310p pkg); 2 JB Guthrie (Reserve Champion) – 46.5kg at £140 (301p pkg); 3 JB Guthrie – 48.5kg at £110 (227p pkg). Also forward were 705 cast ewes and tups. Heavy ewes (185) averaged £68.56 selling to £121 for a Beltex from A Morton, Lochend, Denny. Export ewes (293) averaged £36.29. With a poorer show for quality forward in both heavy ewes and export ewes,resulted in the trade being easier on the week.
