Castle’s profile king amongst visitors
Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most recognised castles, according to new research revealed by VisitScotland.
The survey, carried out by YouGov, asked British adults which Scottish castle they considered the best and the five-star attraction was the second highest answer with Edinburgh first.
The historic site was also third in the most well-known castle category – with only Edinburgh and Balmoral recognised by more people.
Research also revealed that almost half (49 per cent) of those surveyed had never visited a Scottish castle.
VisitScotland is encouraging visitors to see as many castles as they can, particularly in the Stirling and Forth Valley area.
Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most historically important sites and was once a favoured residence of Stewart kings and queens who held grand celebrations there.
The research also revealed that Blackness Castle and 15th century Castle Campbell in Dollar Glen are two of the most haunted looking castles in Scotland.
Visitors can also explore the 14th century courtyard castle in Doune.
VisitScotland regional partnerships director Liz Buchanan said:“Stirling Castle truly is one of the finest in the country, so it’s great to see that it also has a strong profile among respondents to our survey.
“Castles are an iconic and integral part of Scotland’s history and culture, and I’m delighted that several of Forth Valley’s castles have featured strongly in the research, from the‘haunted looking’Castle Campbell and Blackness Castle to the Castle of Doune now enjoying renewed fame through Outlander. Each has their own unique story to tell, and I encourage everyone to make it their mission to bag a Scottish castle on their visit here.
“Scotland’s history and culture is one of the top reasons for visiting Scotland.
