OAP (95) hit by car left seriously hurt

Woman could have been avoiding icy path

- Chris Marzella

A 95-year-old woman faces spending Christmas in hospital after being hit by a car in St Ninians at the weekend.

The elderly woman was struck by a car in Glasgow Road, around 20 metres north of the junction with Maitland Crescent, on Saturday (December 16) evening.

Emergency services rushed to the area at around 6.45pm following reports that the woman, from Stirling, had been knocked down by a blue Ford Focus.

The road was closed for a period of time as police officers combed the scene and ambulance crews tended to the woman.

It’s believed that the elderly woman was walking on the road and police say, that whilst investigations are continuing, they are still open to the possibility that the woman stepped on to the road to avoid walking on an ice-covered footpath.

The woman remains in hospital at Forth Valley Royal with multiple fractures, but staff say that she remains in good spirits.

Inspector Andrew Thomson, of the divisional roads policing unit, said: “It seems that she had been walking on the road and intended to cross the road and has been hit by the car. She remains in hospital with serious injuries, but is stable and staff have described her mood as ‘chipper’.

“We are still looking in to all possibilities as to how the lady was struck by the vehicle.”

The driver of the Ford Focus, from Dunblane, was said to be shaken by the incident.

Eyewitnesses say that they saw the woman laying on the ground.

One local resident said: “The length of the entire pavement on Glasgow Road was like a sheet of ice for days.”

The incident happened just yards from a spot where Stirling Council recently installed a new puffin crossing, following concerns over the safety of the junction between Glasgow Road and Barnsdale Road.

In what proved to be a busy weekend for the road policing unit, officers also responded to reports of an 85-year-old man in the Falkirk area also being struck by a vehicle over the weekend. The man also ended up in Forth Valley Royal Hospital.
