- Alastair McNeill

A dedicated volunteer at the National Trust for Scotland’s Bannockburn site has received a special award.

Brooke Walker contributes to the conservation charity through her work with the property’s learning team, engaging with visitors to the battle site to share her knowledge and enhance their experience.

At a ceremony in Perth recently she was presented an NTS volunteer of the year special commendation award.

Brooke’s ability to cheerfully interact with others, while handling medieval weaponry, as well as managing a severe sight condition, impressed both visitors and staff alike at Bannockburn.

Her nomination noted: ‘The amount of effort, dedication and enthusiasm Brooke puts into delivering her role makes her an asset to the learning team and a joy to work with.’

Awards were presented in categories including gardens, groups, outdoor conservation and built property, representing the breadth of volunteer work for the National Trust for Scotland across the country.

Brooke’s award was presented by National Trust for Scotland chief executive Simon Skinner, who said: “Volunteers are a vital force in protecting Scotland’s heritage, devoting their time and talent to our charity and the wonderful places in our care.

“I want to say thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers who play such an important role at Bannockburn and at every National Trust for Scotland site across the country.

“As we enter 2018 and the national Year of Young People, we recognize that young volunteers like Brooke are the future members and employees of the Trust, and we certainly value their particular contribution to our conservation work.”

The NTS has around 3500 volunteers who play a key role in keeping Scotland’s heritage alive at properties and offices all over Scotland.

Bannockburn is currently looking for volunteers to join the learning team to engage with visitors of all ages.
