Roadworks show what effect a cortege would have

-

I write in response to Rev Colin Renwick’s letter (Observer, December 13) titled ‘Crematorium plans need reasoned debate’. Yes, open reasoned debate is what is called for especially from the residents of Bannockburn where this proposed crematorium may be located.

Mr Renwick does not live or work in our historic village. John Fowler, whose letter prompted the response from Rev Renwick, is a resident of Bannockburn and I am sure has the welfare of the village and the people who live here, present and future, are uppermost in his thoughts. If the proposed siting of a crematorium was to be in Dunblane, would the minister be so supportive?

It is a great pity that having recently secured a successful community buyout of the historic Bannockburn House and with renovation works now on-going, that its new neighbour may be a brand new crematorium. Recent roadworks around the proposed crematorium site have illustrated what a funeral cortege may experience on accessing the proposed site.

And corteges will experience the HGV traffic making its way to the Muirpark truck stop along with heavy farm vehicles which use and own the access roads to the site.

The issue of cost difference at Falkirk Crematorium for non-Falkirk residents could surely be resolved by the powers that be at Stirling and Falkirk Councils working together. Having committed to extensive upgrading works at Camelon – it would be in Falkirk Council’s interests to ensure parity.

We are all in favour of open and reasoned debate, but it must also be informed debate and should rightly reflect the views of those who call the community of Bannockburn home.
