Hotel guests leave behind their dog

- Chris Marzella

A dog and a giant inflatable unicorn were left behind by absent–minded guests at a Stirling hotel last year.

The bizarre incidents happened at the Travelodge Hotel at the Stirling service station, off the M80.

And both the dog – a Scottie called Taggart – and unicorn are among a list of things guests staying at the budget hotel chain have forgotten to take from their rooms after checking out.

Housekeeping team members at the Stirling branch got a surprise when they opened the hotel room door and were greeted by Taggart, still in the room after his owner had headed home.

The guests had gone into town to meet a friend for a coffee and were supposed to come back and pick up their pet.

However, they forgot about Taggart and only realised when they reached the motorway and turned around to make a speedy return.

Staff were also met with an even weirder sight at the hotel when they discovered a giant inflatable unicorn which another guest had left behind.

Elsewhere, at a hotel in Perth, one guest forgot to take their prized coin collection, worth £200,000. In Livingston, a six-foot grandfather clock was forgotten and in Edinburgh, staff discovered a speech written out by a politician.

And one new bride staying at Glasgow Queen Street Travelodge left behind her mother-in-law.

She only realised when she got home that she had forgotten her new family member.

In Aberdeen, a business executive left his 50-year-old teddy bear called Rupert.

The distressed man sent his PA to personally collect the vintage bear from London as he could not sleep without it.

Another businessman staying in Dundee omitted to take his company’s accounts whilst staying on a two-day business trip and had to send his assistant to collect the vital papers all the way from London.

Travelodge spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed said: “With millions of customers staying across our 43 hotels in Scotland, for a wide variety of reasons, we do get some interesting items being left behind.

“As more business customers are staying with us than ever before, we have had some precious items being left behind such as a the 50-year old teddy bear called Rupert belonging to a high flying executive, company accounts, business presentations as well as a politician’s speech.

“The running theme our customers do tell us, is that the pace of modern life is so fast and furious that time is of the essence, especially when getting from A to B, and therefore valuable possessions are easily forgotten.”

Travelodge is currently building a new city centre hotel in Goosecroft Road in Stirling.

The new £5.4 million accommodation will be situated on the site of the former Rainbow Slides swimming pool.

The company – which opened its first hotel in Scotland in 1986 at Bannockburn – hopes to create 20 new jobs in the new 74– bedroom hotel and give the local economy a £1.3m boost
