Bird released back into wild after being injured

-

A little grebe, or dabchick, treated at the Scottish SPCA centre in Fishcross has been released back into the wild.

The animal welfare charity treated the bird for minor injuries when he arrived into their care on January 6.

Centre manager Colin Seddon said: “The little grebe arrived into our care with a damaged wing after being attacked by gulls. His injuries were treated by Lorraine Gow, our head of birds, and he was successfully released the same day.

“The little grebe is a diving water bird who will spend most of their life on the water except for when they are nesting. They nest either on an island or at the edge of water.

“They are unable to walk any distance and often get grounded when flying across land and struggle to take off again which makes them vulnerable to predators.”

Anyone who discovers an injured or distressed wild animal should call the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
