‘You’re drinking yourself to death’

- Court reporter

A bigot who made racial slurs towards a woman at a house in Balfron has been warned that he is “drinking himself to death”.

Adam Leishman (38) acted in a racially aggravated manner which was intended to cause alarm and distress to Kathleen Anderson during an incident on June 16.

During the disturbance, which took place at a property on Kepculloch Road, he shouted, swore, acted in an aggressive manner and used racially offensive language.

Later on the same day, while travelling in a police car on the A811 Balfron to Stirling road, he made more offensive comments.

Leishman, of Station Road in Balfron, shouted, swore, acted in an aggressive manner, made abusive remarks and made sectarian remarks towards police officers.

When he appeared at Stirling Sheriff Court for sentencing on Wednesday his solicitor Ken Dalling explained that Leishman was already serving a six-month sentence.

Mr Dalling added: “Sentence in this case was deferred for a substance treatment service assessment in relation to alcohol. However, he is not suitable due to a lack of previous engagement.”

Sheriff Wyllie Robertson replied: “There was concern from the social work department that he is drinking himself to death.”

Sentencing Leishman to a community payback order, Sheriff Robertson said: “You heard what I said. You’re drinking yourself to death and unless you do something about it that’s what’s going to happen. You have to address this yourself.”

Leishman was placed under supervision for 12 months and ordered to attend alcohol treatment. This will come into force once he is released from prison.

Sheriff Robertson added: “If you fail to carry out the terms of this order you will be sent to custody.”
