Memoriesguest
A special guest speaker attended the second meeting of the Stirling County RFC Memories Group last week.
Broadcaster, author and academic Hugh Dan McLennan spoke to those present at the Bridgehaugh clubhouse on Tuesday, January 16.
Mr McLennan talked about his passion for commentating on sport being broadcast on television and radio – while also his life as a sports fan.
One of his stories told of a special experience during a rugby World Cup semi-final when a bemused Australian rugby team arrived onto the pitch in darkness – as the floodlights were turned off for the arrival of the All Blacks.
He went on to speak about the development of the sports memories project across rugby, football, cricket, golf, curling and, his first love, shinty.
The Stirling County group aims to stimulate memories through sporting debate and discussion.
It is hoped that some of the Stirling County team photographs and other memorabilia brought to meetings will be provided for inclusion in a national sports archive
The next meeting will be at 1pm on Tuesday, February 13, where Kevin McKenzie, a home-grown Stirling Scottish internationalist, will be the guest speaker. Contact derekyoung54@ hotmail.com for more information, or go along on the day.
