Car park takeover could save £50,000

-

A budget proposal to take over the running of a city centre car park could rake in a five-figure sum, say council officials.

Wellgreen multi-storey car park is currently operated by an external firm and council officials say if the authority managed the facility in-house it could save £50,000 by 2019/20.

In the budget options, council officials say: “Wellgreen multi-storey car park is owned by Stirling Council but currently operated under a managenent agreement by an external firm which manages all aspects of the car park on behalf of the council. In return it receives a management fee and recovery of overheads.

“It could be more cost effective for the council to operate and manage the car park in-house.”

While they expect to save nothing in the next financial year or subsequent years, they say the proposal could save £50,000 in 2019/20.

Floating the idea on social media, the council appears to have found favour with the idea from some, with Neil Macaoidh and Brenda Smith both describing the proposal as a “no brainer” and Leeze Lawrence saying: “It’s time to bring it all back in house”.

Lesley Todd was content with the idea as long as current staff did not lose their jobs and the price of parking there wasn’t hiked up.

All day parking at the car park currently costs £2.20.

Ailsa McLeod added: “As long as you don’t bump the prices up to make it unaffordable to those of us who work in town and park all day.

Also keep the staff. The three folk who work there are absolutely lovely, have a great work and customer service ethic.”

Margaret Thomson asked the council: “If you knew this simple change would have saved this much money why have you waited till now?”
