Plane noise is really taking off, say locals

- Chris Marzella

There have been more complaints about aeroplanes causing noise problems over Stirling .

Residents claim that the number of plans cruising overhead has been on the rise, but it’s unclear where exactly they are coming from.

Cambusbarron resident, Carol Kirk (60) said noise from the aircraft can be heard all day long. She claims that as she walks her dog and spends time at her allotment in Bridgehaugh, near Stirling Rugby Club, she notices constant noise overhead.

She said:“Before Christmas there seemed to be a regular midday flight which flew directly over Stirling. Since Christmas these flights have increased greatly.

“On Friday (January 26) it was a particularly bright sunny day. It was possible to see the planes, which seemed to be taking off from Edinburgh Airport and flying west over Riverside, Bridgehaugh and Causewayhead. Once they were over Causewayhead they then changed direction.

“The noise from these planes is almost constant all day. The sky was full of vapour trails.

“There has been no consultation with the residents of Stirling. Most of us live here because it’s a peaceful, tranquil, semi-rural location. If we are to be subjected to this kind of noise pollution, then at very least we should be consulted.

“There is also the danger of increased air pollution. The air quality in Stirling is generally good.

“I have spoken to lifelong residents of Stirling who say that they have never heard anything like this before.”

“I’m out in the open a lot so notice this noise pollution. My concern is that we have not been consulted. It’s impossible for a member of the general public to speak to the airport about this.”

However, it’s unclear where the planes spotted in the skies are coming from.

Mrs Kirk initially suspected the planes may be coming from Edinburgh Airport as they appeared from the east and travelled west, but Edinburgh Airport says it does not regularly use Stirling as part of its flight path.

Glasgow Airport has also denied that the flights originate from there.

A spokesperson said:“We have not made any changes to our flight paths in a quite a number of years.

“We have just begun consultations that will take the best part of a year to complete before any flight paths can be changed.”

In August last year, residents in Causewayhead raised concerns over noise pollution coming from low flying helicopters taking tours over the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle.
