Japanese movie fest coming to Macrobert

A special programme of events celebratin­g Japanese cinema is coming to the Macrobert.

The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2018 are presenting Un(true) Colours: Secrets and Lies in Japanese Cinema.

Events kick off with a screening and question and answer session next Monday (February 5) and will continue until Monday, March 26.

The theme of the programme explores the intriguing aspect of human nature which leads people to tell a lie or keep something from others – whether with good intentions or bad.

On the opening night writer, cinematogr­apher and editor Kosuke Mukai will take part in a Q&A following the showing of Gukoroku (Traces of Sin) from 7.30pm.

Kosuke is known for screenwrit­ing an array of Japanese series’ and films, including Shinya Shokudo (2009-present), Linda, Linda, Linda (2005) and The Girl in the Sun (2013).

He was awarded the Ryuzo Kikushima Award in 2007 for his contributi­on as a screenwrit­er for The Matsugane Potshot (2007) and was the winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the 71 annual Mainichi Film Concours Film Awards for his screenplay for the film Stoshi: A Move for Tomorrow (2016).

Gukoroku: Traces of Sin, which will be shown on the opening night of the programme, is his most recent offering – and was featured at the Venice Film Festival in 2016.

The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme is produced and organised by the Japan Foundation with funding from the likes of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, Japan Airlines and Yakult.

Since 2004 they have put together films under a chosen theme to highlight trends in Japanese cinema, showcasing some of the best movies to come from the country.
