Don’t be gill-ible say police after fish sale scam

-

Police this week issued a warning to householders after an elderly resident almost fell victim to a doorto-door fish selling scam.

Officers at last Wednesday’s meeting of Riverside Community Council reported that a man selling fish went to the home of an 80-year-old woman in the Riverside area.

The man, who was dressed in a white jacket and hat , had a polystyrene box full of fish which he said he was worth £400 and which he offered to sell her for £346.

The woman agreed to buy the fish and gave the man a cheque but, say police, it was clear that fish was “not worth £346 let alone £400”.

A member of the woman’s family learned about the sale and they were able to stop the cheque before it was cashed.

Two people at the community council meeting said the fish seller had also visited their homes about the same time but they opted not to buy the produce.

Inspector Donna Bryans, of Stirling Police, said inquiries into the incident were continuing.

The man was described as in his 40s with an English – possible Geordie – accent – and about 5ft 9 ins tall.

Inspector Bryans said: “We would advise people not to buy products on their front door step unless they are totally satisfied that what they are being offered is genuine.”
