Why not join Stirling Castle Angling Club?

- Donald Morton

Invitations have gone out to fishermen and women from a local angling club looking to boost its membership.

Stirling Castle Angling Club has been in existence since 1949, originally starting as a relatively small syndicate for working people to be able to enjoy loch fly fishing at a reasonable price.

The club leases Cocksburn Reservoir above Bridge of Allan, known to many locally by the name of the surrounding forestry land, Pendreich.

The club’s ethos of good value brown trout fishing has largely been maintained, though the membership has grown over time and these days is capped at 200.

In line with national practice, the trout season opens on Thursday, March 15 and the club is looking for new members. Anyone interested can attend the AGM to be held at the Birds and the Bees, Causewayhead on Monday, February 12 at 8pm (prospective members will not be able to participate in the AGM ).

Club member Kenny Halley said: “We are expecting membership to be priced at £40 this season which is fabulous value for a whole season’s fishing.”

The club also invites members to participate in regular outings throughout the season to popular stillwaters such as Lake of Menteith, Carron Valley, Burnhouse and Glencorse to name but a few. The club is affiliated to SANACC and SANA and participates in national competitions.

Last year, the club paid tribute to member Lex McCrindle, a driving force in the last 20 years or so who sadly passed away suddenly on New Year’s Day 2017.

Kenny added:“The club has continued in Lex’s absence and has honoured his contribution to angling in the area by running the inaugural Lex McCrindle Trophy competition in 2017, which is open to all members of Stirling Castle Angling Club, and is fished for on one of the regular club outings each season.”
