Cup dream ends despite a spirited performance

Douglas Athletic .. 2 Milton ................... 0

Despite a fine performance, Milton came up short against Douglas to exit the Scottish Amateur Cup on Saturday.

They took the game to their Dundeebased opponents and early on they had a couple of chances to open the scoring.

Harris cut the ball back from the byline but Gardiner’s effort was blocked. Then Shaddick twice had shots well saved.

Milton had keeper McKay to thank after he made a tremendous save to prevent Douglas from taking the lead. But he was helpess in the 20th minute when a close-range shot was blocked with the Milton defender unable to get out of the way.

The referee deemed it a penalty, which the home team converted.

The visitors tried to hit back and Statter set up Shaddick whose shot was again blocked. Masterson and Henderson then combined but the latter’s effort shaved the outside of the post.

Right on half-time a wonderful solo run from Statter ended with his shot going just over the bar.

The second half was as open as the first, with both teams evenly matched and chances falling at each end. Grieve had a header saved then Henderson was unlucky with a close-range shot.

McKay had a magnificent save from point-bank range as the home team searched for a second goal. With Milton pushing forward at every opportunity, it left gaps in defence and Douglas exploited this with five minutes remaining to book their place in the next round.

On Saturday Milton are on their travels again, away to Shortlees from Ayrshire in the fifth round of the West of Scotland Cup.
