Body in woods is man from Stafford

Police are treating the death as unexplained

- Robert Fairnie

A body found in Callander woodland last month was that of a 46 year-old man from almost 300 miles away.

Police officers were called to countryside close to Keltie Bridge Caravan Park – to the east of the town – after reports of a body being found a wooded area on the evening of Wednesday, January 24.

They were unable to identify the remains initially, with forensic analysis taking weeks to complete.

But earlier this week police confirmed that the man had now been formally identified as an adult male from the Stafford area of England.

It’s not known how long he had been in the woodland for.

While the caravan site has been closed for the winter season, the area, and surrounding woodland, is popular with visitors and dog walkers.

Stafforshire Police say they were not aware of the matter – and they have no outstanding missing person cases which match the description of the deceased.

At first Police Scotland described the death as “unexplained” but said they were following a line of inquiry.

But this week they said they were now treating it as non-suspicious, with a report submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A spokesperson said: “Police in Forth Valley were called to a wooded area near Keltie Bridge Caravan Park in Callander around 5.10pm on Wednesday, January 24,2018, following the discovery of a man’s body. The man has now been formally identified as a 46-year-old from the Stafford area of England.

“His death is being treated as nonsuspicious and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
