Move to Malmo is a family favourite for Brown

- Robert Fairnie

Dunblane footballer Fiona Brown believes her move to Malmo should make travel easier for those visiting her from Scotland.

But her proud family say they need no added excuse to fly out to Sweden and watch the talented 22-year-old take to the pitch for new club FC Rosengård.

Since she was a youngster her mum Alison, dad Stuart and older brother Ian have travelled far and wide to watch her tormenting defences.

Having previously starred for Celtic and Glasgow City, Fiona moved to Sweden in 2016.

And after an impressive first season abroad with Eskilstunda United DFF she earned a transfer to one of the country’s top clubs in Malmo-based FC Rosengård at the end of 2017.

However Alison explained that Fiona’s new life overseas hasn’t suddenly heralded the start of their family footballing away days.

She said:“I’ve been to watch her play for Scotland at various age groups — visiting places like Macedonia, Croatia, Austria and Switzerland. Some places I’ve loved but would never have otherwise visited. It’s actually a great excuse for a holiday.

“We went to watch her a few times in Eskilstunda last year and I thought that was a lovely place. Malmo is quite different though, and I think she’s delighted that she’s right on the beach, and it’s a bigger place.

“For us the flights to Copenhagen are regular so we can get over quite easily. There are flights on the Friday and Sunday. We were actually over there for her first game.”

Fiona told the Observer earlier this week that her close proximity to the famous Oresund Bridge, and Copenhagen Airport, should make life more straightforward for those who want to watch her play.

Alison added:“She always liked the idea of going abroad — and when she makes a decision, or wants something, she just goes for it.

“She has really grown as a person since she has moved away. She went to a totally different place, had to meet new people and get used to a different way of life, but she has adjusted so well. The opportunities that football has brought her have been great.”

Alison added:“We’re all very proud of her. She has said for years that her passion is football and she made sure that she followed it.

“Neither her dad or I are really football people but she got involved in it through an Active Stirling session when she was at primary school, and really enjoyed it. She played all sports but football was the one she kept going with.”
