Fencing stars make their point

-

Denny-based Sancroft Blades Fencing Club are looking to welcome new members.

The club, which runs classes every Tuesday at Denny Sports Centre from 7.30-9pm, recently travelled to Liverpool to compete in the Merseyside Open, with former Commonwealth Fencing Championships medallist Jennifer Sancroft second in the women’s sabre ahead of Elsie Llewellyn in third and Catriona Thomson fifth.

In the men’s sabre Ethan Llewellyn was runner-up and Andy Pearson was 19th.

This capped off an incredible first year for the club which also included athletes being selected for Scotland’s UK School Games, Scotland’s Senior Five Nations, Team GB at under 20 and under 17 level as well as selection to Senior World Cups as part of the senior British squad.

Catriona said: “At Sancroft Blades the entire club feels like an extended family. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a performance athlete, we all help each other improve.”

Four members are currently in contention for spots on the Scotland Senior team at the upcoming Commonwealth Championships in November, with another three hoping for places in the Junior and Cadet Commonwealth Championships in Newcastle in July.

As fencing receives no funding in Scotland the club will be undertaking a range of funding activities including a sponsored “fence-a-thon”as well as a range of “come and try”taster sessions in the coming months.

They have also recently launched a“Fund My Team” campaign which can be found at www.fundmyteam.co.uk.
