A Dunblane 12-year-old has received a top environmental award for her efforts to rid the nation of litter.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful presented Ella Ritch with the prestigious Clean Up Scotland‘hero of the month’award in recognition of her commitment to remove litter from countryside all across the country.

Ella received the award, which is part of the national Clean Up Scotland Campaign, in acknowledgement of her efforts to undertake a Litter Pick of Scotland. Ella has kept a blog about her many adventures which see her remove litter in her #2MinuteCleanUp bag.

“I decided to do my litter pick of Scotland because I wanted to raise some money to help animals and also do something to help the environment,”said Ella.“I really like being outside and having little adventures in interesting places. I don’t like seeing beautiful places spoiled by litter and it feels good to try and fix that. My whole family have helped me a lot.

“It’s amazing to get an award because I never expected something like that would happen. Anyone could be a litter hero - all you need is a bag and a little bit of time.”

The award is supported by Helping Hand Company who provide each hero with a clean-up kit - including a new Scottish litter picker and handy hoop.

Heather McLaughlin, community project officer with Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Ella is truly an inspiration to other young people who want to get involved in helping to care for the environment.”
