A whole new chapter for bookworms of St Mary’s
Pupils at Bannockburn’s St Mary’s Primary School have been responding with enthusiasm to a number of book projects.
They have been taking part in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge which aims to encourage children to read.
St Mary‘s P6 teacher Laura McCabe chose James Robertson’s The Book of the Howlat for St Mary’s pupils to read.
The children have also been raising money to buy the book to send to pupils at the Let Us Shine Girls Academy in Ghana which they have called‘I’m Ghana Share a Book.’
Ms McCabe said:“I chose The Book of the Howlat as it’s a beautiful book. It’s about a little owl who thinks he’s really ugly and grows into himself. It’s a really inspiring book for children.”
Books have also been collected to be re-sold for donations in the run up to World Book Day.
The grand total of books collected at St Mary’s is 1437.
Many of the books will be reread by pupils before they are sold on.
Ms McCabe said:“Every child will be reading these books for World Book Day.
“There is such a buzz in the school at the moment. The pupils are having a great time. Reading has really captured their imagination.
“And it has also opened their eyes to helping those less fortunate than themselves.”
Fundraisers held so far for Let Us Shine have included carol singing, a movie afternoon in January and the sale of Valentine’s Day cards.
