Berlin trip From February 12-14, a group of 19 senior pupils visited Berlin on a field trip run by the History and Modern Languages departments to further extend Higher pupils’ knowledge of Germany. First visit was to the Jewish Museum where they learned more about the life of Jewish people in Germany prior to and under Nazi rule. The architecture of this museum has been designed so that every part is significant to the Jewish experience, making it a thought provoking place to visit. The next day pupils began with a visit to the Wannsee Villa, where they were given an informative tour around the building where German officers discussed the Final Solution to the “Jewish problem”. The group found it hard to believe that such a horrific offence was committed in such a tranquil setting. After Wannsee it was a trip to Sachsenhausen concentration camp where they learned about the terrible conditions endured by inmates who were not only Jewish but also other Nazi ‘undesirables’. There were also vistis to the Brandenburg Gate and the Bundestag, the German Parliament building. Before returning home there was another visit to the German Resistance Memorial Centre to learn about individuals and organised groups who opposed the Nazi regime within Germany. Sport The S1 Football team were in action again last week taking on a strong Grangemouth team with the prospect of a league cup semi-final up for grabs. A thrilling game ended in a 5-5 draw with goals coming from Brodie Cameron (2), Jack Tough, Ross Pincombe and Drew Skinner. The tie was then decided on penalties with Stirling coming out on top after goalkeeper Luca Kildare managed to stop the final Grangemouth penalty. The boys now look to show the same determination and resilience in the up coming semi-final. Readathon The school is running its annual sponsored Readathon for S1 pupils this week in connection with the charity Read for Good who provide a regular supply of brand new books and storyteller visits to children in hospital all over the UK. Please visit bit.ly/shsreadforgood to sponsor a pupil, or visit www.readforgood.org for more information on the work of the charity.

Order forms for S6 individual photos were sent home via schoolbag mail on Monday. Order forms need to be returned to the school office, complete with full payment, by Wednesday, March 7. S5/6 prefect photo order forms are available and can be collected from the school office and as with the individual photos they must be returned by Wednesday, March 7. Immunisations All S1/S2 girls will be receiving their HPV vaccination on Friday, March 2; there will also be catchups for some girls who have missed this previously. MMR catchups for some pupils will also take place on this day. For parents who have informed the school that their child is not to be vaccinated, Child Health have been informed. Spring Concert Tickets are available for the Spring Concert which takes place on Monday, March 12 in the school assembly hall at 7pm. Tickets are free from the school office but are restricted to two per family. Sport Aidan McKeown has been selected for the Scottish Schools Under 18 football squad for this season’s Centenary Shield fixtures against the other four nations. This is quite a unique opportunity for Aidan and also a matter of considerable pride and achievement for his school and family. Congratulations to the U14s football team who had a convincing 16-4 win against Balfron. And well done to the U13s on their 2-1 win over Our Lady’s from Motherwell. Autism Provision The farm now has chickens! Staff and pupils in Autism Provision are now caring for three hens which will live in the autism garden. They arrived last Wednesday afternoon and are laying eggs already which we have already used in scones for Scone Friday! Wall of Wonder A reminder to parents and carers that they are welcome to nominate their child for the Wall of Wonder by using the Twitter tag #stmwow. Alternatively contact the school office by telephone or e-mail to let them know about some of the fantastic achievements of the young people. Scottish Opera A group of 17 S4-6 pupils took a trip to Glasgow’s Theatre Royal on February 21 to watch Scottish Opera’s production of Flight by Jonathan Dove. This is a modern opera set in the departure terminal of Charles De Gaulle Airport and about the characters trapped there by an electrical storm. The performance was outstanding and it was a fantastic experience for the young people, many of whom had never seen an opera before. 100 Club Lucky winners for February are: 1 £37 (No 7) Leanne Kane Winter; 2 £20 (No 83) Lisa Grant; 3 £11 (No116) Anna-Maria Rough.
