Pupils win the local heat of annual Rotary club event
Riverside Primary School took the honours at this year’s local heat of the Rotary Primary Schools Quiz.
The annual quiz organised by the Rotary Club of Carse of Stirling took place at Stirling High School last week with a record 15 local primary schools taking part — Allan’s, Bannockburn, Borestone, Braehead, Cambusbarron, Cornton, Cowie, East Plean, Gargunnock, Kippen, Our Lady’s, Riverside, St Margaret’s, St Mary’s and St Ninians.
The teams of four Primary 7 pupils answered 10 rounds of questions on a range of subjects including Geography, Art and Music, Science, Literature, Famous People, Environment and Natural World, Sports, Maths, Stirling, Spelling and Grammar.
Organised and compared by the rotary club’s youth services convenrr Gordon Brewster, the lead in the quiz changed many times throughout the close fought contest with the eventual outright winner Riverside Primary just pipping St Mary’s Primary.
Club president Alastair Plank and Stirling Provost Christine Simpson presented the prizes, with Riverside Primary receiving £225 for the school and each pupil receiving a £15 Amazon voucher — while St Mary’s Primary received £125 for the school and a £10 Amazon voucher for each pupil taking part. All participating pupils received a certificate.
Both schools now have the opportunity of taking part in a regional finals to be held on Saturday, April 28 at 2pm in the Logie Lecture Theatre, Stirling University. From that competition the two winning teams go through to enter the District Final held in Aberdeen on June 9.
A retirement collection was held for Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign which raised a total of £124.20; this is matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation meaning that a total of £372.60 was raised.
As well as Provost Simpson, other guests included Rotary Assistant District Governor John Holme, Carolyne McDaid (Service Manager, Broad General Education) and Stirling High Headteacher Paul Cassidy.
A special thanks to Trudi Togneri from Stirling High. Thanks also to all parents, carers, guests and of course the P7 pupils who participated in the evening.
