Scotland victory made in Stirling

While there was no club rugby on Saturday, there was plenty for Stirling County supporters to get excited about.

Scotland’s sensationa­l Calcutta Cup win featured a number of players with a County connection. Finn Russell, Grant Gilchrist,Tommy Seymour and Peter Horne, who all started, plus replacemen­ts Jamie Bhatti, Ali Price and Nick Grigg have all appeared in County colours at some time.

Logan Trotter came off the bench in Scotland U20s’thrilling 24-17 over the Auld Enemy at Myreside on Friday night and Megan Kennedy and Siobhan Cattigan were in the Scotland women’s squad who were defeated by 43-8 by England at Scotstoun, with Megan starting and Siobhan coming on as a replacemen­t.

Ross Curle started and Ruairidh Leishman was on the replacemen­ts’bench when the Scotland Clubs team lost 26-23 against their Irish equivalent­s at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Friday.

It is back to league action on Saturday. Having secured their place in BT Premiershi­p with the win over Glasgow Hawks, Stirling County are away to Marr.

Their oppoenents need a bonus point win to climb out of the automatic relegation spot in their final match and will hope Boroughmui­r and Hawick do not pick up anything from their remaining matches.

The Edinburgh side visit Hawks then host Heriots, while Hawick are at home to Melrose, who are Stirling’s final opponents on March 10.

County 2nds travel to Hamilton 2nds in a National Reserve League 1 match and the 3rds are at home to Madras Rugby in Caledonian League 2 Midlands.
