Teacher’s African adventure

Bannockburn to Ghana

- Alastair McNeill

A Bannockburn schoolteacher is off to Africa later this year to see for herself the school which her pupils have helped through fundraising.

St Mary’s P6 teacher Laura McCabe will be travelling to Ghana with her fiance Stephen McKay at the end of June.

It follows pupils raising £480 earlier this year for a ‘I’m Ghana Share a Book’ at the end of February, a combined First Minister’s Reading Challenge and World Book Day event.

Laura (26) and 23 yearold Stephen will be at the Let Us Shine Girls Academy, in Kpandi, for just over two weeks.

They are funding the majority of the trip themselves, but are to hold a race night fundraiser to cover some of the costs.

During their trip Laura will be teaching the Ghanaian pupils and Stephen will focus on sports.

Laura said: “We’re very excited about the trip to Ghana. We can’t wait to make a difference and help other people. We are really thrilled to be supporting the charity. They are so appreciative of help.

“I will help to improve the pupils spoken English, literacy and numeracy and I will also be training and developing teachers at the school. Stephen will running sporting activities.

“In the evenings we will also be providing English lessons to the local villagers or parents of children at the school as well as helping in the local maternity unit.”

Laura also said the experience will be useful when she returns to St Mary’s. She explained: “I think it will really help children here to understand the lives of children around the world less fortunate than ourselves.

“It will also help me and my own teaching practice as I will not be able to use all the resources so readily available here and will instead be using basic resources or things I can find around the school.”

The St Mary’s pupils have already raised money to send James Robertson’s The Book of the Howlat to the Ghanaian pupils.

The pupils also raised £480 at a book sale to help buy books and othjer materials for Laura and Stephen to take to Ghana.

The books were collected by pupils to be resold for World Book Day, March 1.

Laura and Stephen are also looking for donations to take to Ghana like football strips and footballs.
