Balfron pupils raise funds for charity in memory of their tragic classmate
More than 200 pupils at Balfron High took part in a special sporting event in memory of a much-loved former classmate.
The Owen Britton Triathlon was held at the school last week – raising more than £1000 for the charity Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy Patients (SUDEPACTION). Owen passed away in his sleep in January 2016 after suffering a nocturnal seizure.
And his mum Linda Barclay and dad David have joined forces with staff at Balfron High to stage the triathlon is his name.
A series of awareness-raising assemblies have already taken place, and last week’s sporting showpiece was deemed a huge success by all involved – raising awareness of the condition and money for the good cause.
Linda said:“It was a fabulous event and was very well run by the school. We are so appreciative of what they have done, and especially the support they have shown towards our daughter [Isla]. We can’t thank them enough.
“The support we’ve had from the local community has also been amazing – and through this event we have raised around £1200.
“We would also like to thank the Nuffield [health club] in Milngavie for their generosity in sponsoring the event.”
The family are trying to raise £10,000 to pay for a PhD student to analyse data complied by charity SUDEP-ACTION from interviews with relatives who have lost loved ones to the condition.
