Doune lose out in ten goal thriller

-

Doune Castle ........ 4 Broomhouse ......... 6

Some questionable defending saw Doune Castle lose a ten-goal thriller at home to Broomhouse in the Caledonian League Premier Division.

Strikes from Andy Innes, Chris Dougherty and a double from Alan Inglis weren’t enough to secure the points as their goal-friendly visitors netted six times.

Doune got off to the perfect start when Innes stabbed the ball home from six-yards to open the scoring in two minutes.

However the lead was short-lived as a few minutes later Kieron McLeod misjudged the direction of a Broomhouse free kick and his late touch failed to stop the ball crossing the line.

The home side were back in front in 17 minutes when Inglis met an inviting Innes cross to volley the ball home – high beyond the keeper.

But for the second time they failed to hold on to the lead for any length of time when a long-ball undone the Doune defence and a visiting forward got to the ball before McLeod to nod home. Doune refused to give up and were once again back in front in 23 minutes. Innes, who was heavily involved throughout, swung in an excellent corner and Dougherty towered above everyone to bullet a header in to the back of the net from 12-yards.

The pattern continued and Doune were unable to hang on to their lead until half-time – with the away side producing their third equaliser five minutes before the break.

And the hosts got off to the worst possible start to the second half when Broomhouse scored in 48 minutes to go ahead for the first time before increasing their lead to 5-3 on the hour.

Doune pulled one back with seven minutes to play with a back-post effort from close-range but were unable to capitalise and, after throwing everyone forward for a corner in 89 minutes, Broomhouse broke away and scored on the counter-attack.

The home side battled until the final whistle but were left ruing their inability to hold on to a lead which they had taken three times.

Doune Castle: McLeod, Balmer (McGowan), Feaks, C Dougherty, More, Coubrough, A Innes (Docherty), McClure, Duszynski, Inglis, Burns. Substitutes: D Innes, Stewart, Scott.
