Campbell honoured
A memorial bench has been installed to honour the memory of Top of the Town community champion Campbell Graham.
After Campbell’s death last December, Andrew Szwebs of Mercat Cross Community Council suggested such an honour which was agreed unanimously.
“I thought it was fitting to pay tribute to Campbell’s hard work, dedication and commitment over 30 years as a community councillor,” said Andrew.
“This will offer family members and friends somewhere to sit and reflect on his fantastic contribution to the area.”
Campbell was a kenspeckle figure at the Top of the Town and would regularly walk round “his” area of Stirling, meeting and greeting acquaintances all the way.
As well as his community council voluntary work, Campbell, a retired postman, also devoted a big part of his life to St Mary’s RC Church.
He was also well known in football circles, playing for several Junior teams and winning the Scottish Junior Cup and numerous other medals. When his playing days were over, he became equally renowned as a referee, continuing to officiate until the ripe old age of 65.
He shook hands with both the Queen and the Pope, received awards from Prince Charles and from Tony Blair and was also one of the first to be honoured with a Provost’s Award in 1998.
The bench will be situated near the entrance to the Church of the Holy Rude and Cowane’s Hospital.
